TUF 16 Results: Teams tied after another instance of questionable scoring

The Ultimate Fighter has always been an avenue for up-and-coming talent to test their skills against similarly skilled opponents. While the occasional veteran may make his way onto the cast, in general the competitors are relative rookies in the game. However, based on the current season of TUF, it seems the judges are just as green as the fighters.

The last two weeks featured fights that were seemingly in need of a third round to determine a true winner, yet in both instances judges awarded the victory instead of extended the bout. This week, a third round came into play, but it would ultimately be a meaningless gesture after Team Nelson’s Michael Hill received a decision nod despite Team Carwin’s Matt Secor having his back, even attempting a few submissions, for the bulk of the final frame.

The scoring was so bad UFC President Dana White openly called for the involved judges to be axed by the Nevada Athletic Commission.

Hill’s win evened the opposing squads’ records at 3-3, though he wasn’t necessarily proud of how things went down.

“After my fight I felt embarrassed. I felt like I let everybody down, from Dana White, to the producers, my teammates and my country. I think everyone wanted to see Matt Secor’s mouth shut. I have never ever felt that pressure or jitters before. It was like I forgot everything I’d learned to this day. I just froze,” explained Hill. “It’s the worst feeling ever, to know that that fight would be talked about all season, and once I got out of the house, on TV worldwide. I have so much to improve on. Every fight can’t be pretty but you do what you can to win, and one thing’s for sure I won’t ever give up.”

While Secor may have deserved the win, it appears the loss may have been a blessing in disguise as he would not have been allowed to continue in the tournament as is after breaking his hand in the bout.

Other highlights from the show included Roy Nelson determining who would fight by having his team randomly pick numbers, though the process essentially backfired when the individual who won – Dom Waters – passed on the opportunity because Nelson refused to help him select an adversary from Shane Carwin’s group. Also, Secor was shown sharing two extremely emotional stories involving his older brother dying in Iraq and his father passing away last year.
