Strikeforce promised fans a stacked show in January and it appears they intend to deliver. Though not officially announced, a bout between middleweight champion Luke Rockhold and unbeaten striker Lorenz Larkin has been linked to an event on January 12. The match-up was originally scheduled to take place on November 3 before a series of injuries resulted in the card’s cancellation.
MMAJunkie was first to report the expected date of Strikeforce’s potential swan song, as well as the likelihood of Rockhold/Larkin being part of the lineup. Other fighters expected to see action that evening include Daniel Cormier, Gilbert Melendez, and Nate Marquardt.
Rockhold is 10-1 thus far in his young career including nine consecutive wins under the Strikeforce banner. The American Kickboxing Academy product was last seen picking up a hard-fought decision win in a title-defense against Tim Kennedy in July, adding to other notable victories on his record such as those against Keith Jardine and Ronaldo Souza.
The 13-0 Larkin is coming off a successful middleweight debut against Robbie Lawler after a run at 205 pounds. Eight of his wins have come by way of strike-based stoppage.
