With the main card already materializing for the most part it looks like Strikeforce is now focusing on putting together a solid preliminary lineup for the organization’s return to the airwaves on January 12. Though not officially confirmed, it appears lightweights Ryan Couture and K.J. Noons have agreed to face off in Oklahoma City in a bout with an added dose of importance considering Strikeforce’s questionable future.
News of the match-up was first reported by MMAJunkie. Couture-Noons is expected to take place on the Showtime Extreme undercard, as an appearance from unbeaten heavyweight Daniel Cormier will accompany a trio of title-fights featuring Gilbert Melendez-Pat Healy, Nate Marquardt-Tarec Saffiedine, and Luke Rockhold-Lorenz Larkin are already linked to the featured portion of the evening’s broadcast on Showtime.
Though less experienced, the 5-1 Couture will enter the bout with the steam of a three-fight winning streak including an impressive strike-based stoppage of Conor Heun.
Comparably, Noons is coming off a decision loss to Josh Thomson and has come up short in three of his last four scraps. Regardless of his recent performances, the polished striker remains a significant threat to all he faces, holding an overall record of 11-5 with eight TKOs and wins over Yves Edwards, Jorge Gurgel, Billy Evangelista, and Nick Diaz.
