In a few weeks the UFC lightweight title will be up for grabs on network television when Benson Henderson faces Nate Diaz at UFC on FOX 5. Barring injury, the trend of champions seeing action on free television will continue in late January when the world’s foremost MMA promotion returns to the airwaves on January 26 at UFC on FOX 6 with a title-fight between flyweight king Demetrious Johnson and Ultimate Fighter 14 winner John Dodson.
Though already linked to the Chicago show, UFC officials have confirmed the clash along with six other bouts by way of a press release.
The 16-2 Johnson is seen as the #1 125-pound fighter in the world, earning a number of impressive wins as a bantamweight before slimming down, beating Ian McCall and Joseph Benavidez en route to becoming the UFC’s first flyweight champ. However, Dodson should be able to match “Mighty Mouse” in the speed department, possessing knockout power as well leading to strike-based stoppages in two of his three Octagon appearances.
“Chicago is a great fight town and we’re excited to come back to the United Center,” said UFC President Dana White in a prepared statement. “This will be our first big event on FOX for 2013 and we’ve lined up an incredible card, including the flyweight title fight. I can’t wait to get back to Chicago for this event!”
Also officially announced for the show were match-ups between Erik Koch-Ricardo Lamas, Shawn Jordan-Mike Russow, T.J. Grant-Matt Wiman, Clay Guida-Hatsu Hioki, Donald Cerrone-Anthony Pettis, and Quinton Jackson-Glover Teixeira.
