Two top shelf grapplers from the welterweight division are now set to lock horns on Super Bowl Weekend at UFC 156 with the addition of a bout between submission-specialist Demian Maia and relentless wrestler Jon Fitch. Both men, former title-contenders, are coming off impressive wins at UFC 153 and will move a few steps closer to the contendership picture if victorious at the event.
Officials from UFC Brazil have announced the February 2 fight. The card is scheduled to feature Jose Aldo defending his featherweight belt against Frankie Edgar with other scraps on the show including Alistair Overeem-Antonio Silva and Rashad Evans-Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
Maia is 2-0 since dropping down to welterweight, scoring instances of success against Dong Hyun Kim and most recently Rick Story. The 17-4 BJJ ace has nine submissions to his credit and owns past wins over Ed Herman, Dan Miller, Jorge Santiago, and Chael Sonnen.
Fitch got back on the winning track by beating up-and-comer Erick Silva in mid-October, improving his overall mark to 24-4-1. The win was his first since August 2010 due in part to injury.
