Tonight’s UFC on FOX 5 lineup marks one of the year’s most anticipated cards and rightfully so considering the presence of a few legit legends in addition to a championship clash. However, the event came extremely close to losing its headliner after top contender Nate Diaz hit the scale just north of the 155-pound limit for his title-fight with lightweight king Benson Henderson.
Diaz was 155.6 pounds on his first try, failing again to hit 155 even after dropping his trunks. Fortunately, Diaz found a way to shed the final quarter-pound less than an hour later, getting an official green-light for his bout with “Bendo”.
Though a one-pound allowance is given in non-title tilts, such is not the case when gold is up for grabs. Had Diaz been unable to make 155 pounds on the dot, the fight with Henderson may have still taken place but the divisional strap would not have been on the line.
