After a six-year absence, MMA icon Wanderlei Silva will return to Japan for a rumble sure to entertain in the form of a fight with Brian Stann. Like Silva, Stann prefers to strike and has no problem exchanging in the pocket in hopes of producing a knockout win. Interestingly enough, Silva’s scrap with Stann will be contested at 205 pounds, marking a return to the division for both men, and be contested in a five-round format.
UFC officials have also confirmed the clash will headline UFC on Fuel 8. The show is scheduled for March 3 in Saitama, Japan and will also feature Takanori Gomi-Diego Sanchez as well as Mark Hunt-Stefan Struve.
The 12-5 Stann has lost two of his last three bouts, most recently falling by way of decision to Michael Bisping. The 32-year old former Marine has nine knockouts to his credit in addition to success against the likes of Alessio Sakara, Chris Leben, and Jorge Santiago.
Silva is in a similar position as far as his recent performances go though his reputation far exceeds that of Stann. “The Axe Murderer” is one of the most popular fighters in MMA history, compiling an overall record of 34-12-1 and 24 strike-based stoppages in a career spanning fifteen years and featuring a lengthy stint in Japan as part of PRIDE where he picked up victories over Dan Henderson and Quinton Jackson.
