Matt Mitrione: “I’m not afraid of Roy’s power.”

Nelson v WerdumAll four of UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson’s wins inside the Octagon have involved a strike-based stoppage including a few where it only took a single punch to do the damage. While Nelson’s power might intimidate some peers, Matt Mitrione isn’t overly with the possibility of being blasted entering his bout with “Big Country” tonight at the Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale.

Better yet, the 5-1 Mitrione plans on standing with Nelson to prove his point.

“I’ve never been rattled, a) in a fight and b) even in practice. I’ve never been wobbled and I never had to walk around with rubber legs for a little bit. I have a good chin, I have a really strong neck, and that’s probably from my football days,” explained Mitrione in an interview with the UFC’s website, saying flatly, “I’m not afraid of Roy’s power.”

“I know he has a lot of power, but I respect my chin and my durability, and anybody that’s ever seen me fight knows I’m athletic. I fight athletically, I’m mobile, and I don’t just stand in front of somebody and scrap. Whether I’m winning or losing I don’t do that,” Mitrione continued. “I’m sure Roy’s preparing for that, and I think anybody that’s ever seen Roy fight knows that he’s not highly mobile and he’s got a big right hand. He has his gameplan against me and I have my gameplan against him and I think we’re both intelligent enough and both have good enough people around us that we know how to win the fight. It’s just up to us to know to stay the course, outlast the storm, and figure it out.”

Mitrione’s only career loss came by way of decision to Cheick Kongo. Prior to the defeat he’d finished four foes including knockouts of Christian Morecraft and Tim Hague in 2011.

Looks like Matt respected his chin a little too much and not Roy’s power enough. Well at least now Mitrione can say he has been wobbled and knows how it feels now.
