Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale Results: Roy Nelson mashes Matt Mitrione in main event

It used to be that Ultimate Fighter finales featured one or two notable match-ups, a TUF championship clash, and a ton of undercard efforts composed of competitors who failed in their quest to make their respective season’s final. Fortunately for fans, when it came to the Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale lineup, the card was highlighted by a number of interesting bouts and zero appearances from the underwhelming cast outside of Mike Ricci-Colton Smith.

Smith and Ricci battled for the distinction of becoming the Season 16 winner and the perks coming with the honor including a six-figure deal and customized Harley-Davidson. Smith scored both with a decision triumph brought on by superior grappling, making him the first active-duty member of the military to lay claim to the Ultimate Fighter trophy.

The event also featured a main event match-up between heavyweights Roy Nelson (17-7) and Matt Mitrione (5-1). Nelson had won two of his last three tilts including finishes of Mirko Filipovic and Dave Herman, adding another notch by handing Mitrione the second defeat of his career. “Meathead” looked good in the beginning, delivering some stiff kicks, but ate a brutal shot and never recovered. All five of Nelson’s wins in the Octagon have been the result of strikes.

Other significant scraps included Pat Barry-Shane del Rosario and Dustin Poirier-Jonathan Brookins. Also worth pointing out, a bout between Melvin Guillard-Jamie Varner was scratched at the last minute after Varner went down with some sort of stomach issue.

Barry and Poirier both came away with finishes, albeit by vastly different means. The hard-hitting “HD” notched a victory after weathering a storm from Del Rosario in the fight’s opening round and eventually blasting the former Strikeforce fighter with a series of strikes in the second sealing the deal in walk-away fashion. Meanwhile, Poirier was hurt early on but also outlasted his adversary’s attack and caught him in a D’Arce Choke after the former TUF winner went for a takedown.

    Holy Khabilov…that was filthy domination.

Chael helping break down what Catone did wrong in succumbing to a triangle choke. Hahaha…that’s good stuff.

So far this card has been pretty impressive. Just wish they’d step up the pacing of the fights. Both fights have ended early and the second one didn’t start until almost 40 minutes in. That’s a ton of down time.

  • Richard Stabone says:

Varner-Guillard off due to reported illness ko’ing Varner. Damn.

  • Dufresne says:

Damnit! I was seriously looking forward to that fight. Get better soon Varner.

  • Dufresne says:

Oh goody, Kim Winslow is one of the refs tonight. Hopefully she doesn’t get anyone seriously hurt or killed. She has got to be the least competent ref in the entire business. And that’s saying a lot when you’ve got Mazzagatti to be compared to.

  • Dufresne says:

Three fights, three stoppages. I’m perfectly okay with this pattern.

  • Dufresne says:

Just thought I’d share the wikipedia explanation for the cancellation of Varner/Guillard:
Melvin Guillard and Jamie Varner were scheduled to appear on the main card. Prior to the fight, Varner started experiencing menstrual cramps and was not able to compete. That fight may potentially be moved to UFC 155.

  • Dufresne says:

I like Benson Henderson, but watching him try to be a commentator is almost painful sometimes.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

    Heh….thanks Dufresne.

When they interviewed Melvin to get his reaction to the cancellation, he didn’t mince words, saying he lost all respect for Varner as a fighter and basically suggesting the reason he backed out is he was scared. They’re sliding this matchup forward a couple weeks to UFC 155, which helps make up for the loss of Phil Davis vs. Forrest.

Mike Pyle is a damn good fighter, picking up his 6th win in 7 fights, including his 3rd straight finish. The one loss in there was a one-sided beatdown at the hands of Rory, but that fight said way more about Rory than it did Pyle. He’s no joke. They really need to have Rory fight Condit again to see if Rory can rightfully claim his spot as the 2nd best WW fighter on the planet.

Sonnens great though so are the fights as they were last night. Dissapointed about melvyns fight though. Ufc has my appreciation for these free fights for sure.

So far this card is not disappointing just like last nights card. If the Main Card keeps it up im gonna be one happy MMA fan. Also glad to see Pyle get the win, hes always been one of my favorites at 170 and is very underrated if you ask me.

Yeah Chael is great in the studio, it’s his natural calling.

Ok let’s make some picks, boys…

    Poirier
    Del Rosario
Didn’t watch TUF; can’t make an informed pick
    Meathead

  • Creature says:

    I got Poirier
    Barry
    Ricci
    Big Roy

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

…although my fear is Roy turns the main event into a grappling match & grinds out a decision. But if they keep things more open & trade I hot Meathead. So that’s my pick.

Prior, barry, ricci, and nelson by sub. For some reason time warner cable is showning the fights @ 9 so ill be hurting until then.

Kongo thought Del Rosario had Barry right where he wanted him.

    Great fights tonight.

Nice KO, even better post fight speech by Barry.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

I didn’t think he would do it but I’m glad Barry pulled out the victory. Pretty cool guy, pretty good fighter, lethal standup.

Just saw that crybaby Johnny Hendricks is fighting Ellenburger the same night as GSP/Diaz, Rory Mac/Condit. Should be an interesting night thats for sure

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 3 Thumb down 2

  • Richard Stabone says:

Holy f*ck! GSP-Diaz, Condit-Rory, Hendricks-Ellenberger all official on the same card. I think Nick would lose to any of the other 5 but he gets the title shot. Wonderful.

I feel bad for Hendricks. Ellenberger is a monster to get thru for the title shot he already should have earned.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

  • Dufresne says:

They’re gonna have their hands full picking a KO and Sub of the Night. So far I give the slam the KO of the night, but Barry damn near decapitated Del Rosario so I can see that one winning too. And for SotN I’ve got that triangle by Waldberger, but Porier’s D’arce choke was slick as hell too.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

Crybaby Hendricks? Heh, that’s pretty cool.

Tough to understand why a guy riding a 5-fight win streak that includes 3 victories over top-5 WW contenders within the past year would be frustrated that a guy coming off a loss & suspension, who’s never beaten a top-10 WW fighter, gets the title shot ahead of him.

But leave it to MMA fan to put him in his place and call him a crybaby. Boom!

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 6 Thumb down 1

  • Creature says:

He is acting like a damn crybaby, never said i was trying to “put him in his place” but go ahead and try and make it seem that way. Hes the one calling GSP scared and runnung his mouth because the Champion wants to shut up someone who has been dogging him for a long time instead of giving Hendricks what he wants. Hendricks actling like a pissy little boy because he didnt get what he wants is exactly how i see it and am gonna call it like that.

If Hendricks really is the number 1 contender then he should have no problem proving it again, not whining and talking shit because things didnt go his way.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 5

  • Richard Stabone says:

@Creature – You aint alone, dude. There are plenty of fans who don’t give a shit that the guy who’s earned the #1 contender shot is being passed over by a guy coming off a loss & suspension, who’s never beaten a top-10 WW fighters, because that matchup has more drama & will make more money. Welcome to today’s MMA; you fit right in with the crowd.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 2

  • Richard Stabone says:

But calling Hendricks a crybaby and pissy little boy is a nice added touch. That’s ultimate message board, keyboard warrior type of stuff right there.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 2

  • Dufresne says:

Oh look, Mazzagatti looked like he forgot he was the ref again. Good job buddy. You deserve a gold star.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

  • Creature says:

See i never said Hendricks hasnt earned the shot, but he needs to act like an adult and not a spoiled little brat plain and simple. I never said anything about what i think o the matchmaking so you might wanna stop pretending i did. Your making yourself lok a stu[pid sir. And keyboard warrior huh? HA! i can tell you im anything but. And idk who you are, but if you live in the states and are ever around an aread called South Bend Indiana I invite you to stop by the gym I train at and Ill show you personally that im not just some keyboard warrior who sits on his couch badmouthing fighters who has never trained before.

Mazzagatti and Winslow should get together to make the most oblivious baby ever.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  • Creature says:

Oh I apologize for not using correct grammar on a MMA forum, and having a typo that I couldn’t fix due to not having an edit button.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • AlphaOmega says:

It’s more then A typo, also if you’re calling someone stupid, you should probably make sure that sentence doesn’t question your intelligence while at it, just a thought.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  • Creature says:

@Dufresne, Idk about that lol that baby could becoming a ref and end up getting a fighter killed in the Octagon.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Creature says:

LOL! Anyone who uses someones correct or incorrect grammar usage on a MMA forum to measure someone’s intelligence level obviously takes posting on that forum way too seriously. I apologize I dont take my posts on here as seriously as you do. And if he hadnt been trying to call me out on shit that I never said anything about in the first place we wouldnt be having this conversation.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

Someone thinks Hendricks is a crybaby and pissy little boy. I shouldn’t have bothered responding to such nonsense but let’s all move on & enjoy the main event.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Creature says:

Yes I think hes acting like one. But I agree hopefully it lives up to the rest of the card!

    Good night Meathead!!!

Damn! I know Roy has huge power but I would have thought Matt would have been able to last longer than that o.O

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

Haha damn, Roy wings those bombs & it’s effective against most guys. He proved me wrong tonight.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Creature says:

That makes me wonder what it would be like to see Roy slim down to 205 and take a fight with Hendo. That would be epic.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • Dufresne says:

Only 2 fights went to the judges on the entire freaking card. I’m trying to remember another card that had this many finishes, but other than UFC 84 I’m drawing a blank.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • AlphaOmega says:

@Creature, supposedly he made a bet with someone and was going to cut down to 205 if he lost, he lost, but no mention of it since so I don’t know if he’s going to go through with that or not. I know MCM is big on the big country at 205 train

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • Creature says:

I personally would rather see him at 205, I think he would be a monster at that weight. Also I really wanna see Hendo/Big Country. Battle of the monster right hands and unstoppable chins :D
