The injury bug has already bitten UFC 158 despite the card’s announcement only coming a few days ago, as a middleweight meeting between Patrick Cote and Alessio Sakara has been scrapped. The bout was set to serve as a rematch from their controversial UFC 154 fight where Sakara, initially handed a TKO win, was subsequently disqualified based on illegal strikes to the back of Cote’s head.
The March 16 match-up was scrapped after Sakara revealed a he was suffering from a kidney condition known as “renal stress” involving the organ’s inability to filter out certain toxins.
“I cannot fight because of my kidneys,” said Sakara in comment to Fighters Only Magazine. “Three days ago I got some test results and the doctor has ordered that I stop everything for three months.”
Given the amount of time before the upcoming card, as well as it taking place in Montreal, it seems likely the UFC will find Cote a new opponent to fight in front of his hometown fans.
