Bellator 87 to feature trio of lightweight tournament tilts

With Bellator’s debut on Spike TV coming next month the organization has been actively announcing their upcoming schedule of shows and has done so once again. According to an official press release, Bellator 87 is set to unfold on January 31 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan with three 155-pound tournament pairings serving as the evening’s featured fights.

A bout between David Rickels-Lloyd Woodard has been pegged for the main event with earlier action from Patricky Freire- Guillaume DeLorenzi and Alexander Sarnavskiy-Thiago Michel. The three men emerging victorious will move on to the Season 8 semifinal round and be one step closer to earning a title-shot in addition to the final payout of a $100,000 prize.

Nothing was mentioned regarding the fourth quarterfinal clash.

Rickels (11-1) and Woodard (12-2) already appear to be fired up about their upcoming scrap with each talking a bit of smack already despite no real personal beef to speak of.

“Like you saw in my fight against Karl Amoussou, I don’t get intimidated by anyone, and certainly not by a guy named ‘Cupcake,’” cracked Rickels of his opponent’s nickname with Woodard responding, “All I can say is the mountain man from Montana is going to come to Michigan and show this ‘Caveman’ a mountain man ass whooping.”

Meanwhile, the 10-4 Freire is one of the division’s biggest stars and will be hungry for victory after suffering a knockout to Eddie Alvarez in his most recent rumble. Though DeLorenzi (10-1) is making his Bellator debut in the bout, he’ll enter the match with the momentum of a five-fight winning streak and stoppages in all but one of his victories.

Likewise, Michel (11-3) and Sarnavskiy (21-1) are both finishers by trade with a combined 27 TKOs/submissions in 32 total triumphs.
