UFC heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos is set to defend his title for the second time tonight when he faces Cain Velasquez at UFC 155. Though Dos Santos isn’t looking past Velasquez, his employers are and already appear to have a plan in place to determine a new contender later this year regardless of who is wearing the strap.
According to TATAME, UFC President Dana White has confirmed Fabricio Werdum will get a go at the gold if he defeats Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira when the two lock horns in June. Prior to the pairing the two will oppose each other as coaches on TUF Brasil 2.
“Yes. If he wins, they will have their title shot,” said White to the Brazilian media outlet.
Werdum is 2-0 since coming on board last year, taking out Roy Nelson and most recently Mike Russow. He holds an overall record of 16-5-1 with thirteen finishes and past success against the likes of Gabriel Gonzaga, Antonio Silva, and Fedor Emelianenko.
For obvious reasons it is unknown who Werdum would face assuming he gets by “Minotauro” in their match-up. The winner of Dos Santos-Velasquez is expected to take on either Silva or Alistair Overeem depending on how their February fight unfolds, leaving a number of possible scenarios for the 35-year old Werdum. However, if given a choice, chances are “Vai Cavalo” would opt for Dos Santos in order to avenge a 2008 knockout loss to JDS in the champion’s UFC debut.
