UFC lightweight Edson Barboza started 2012 off on a brilliant note by blasting Terry Etim with a spinning-kick knockout so incredible it earned him an invitation to the ESPYs. Though he fell in his follow-up fight and hasn’t been seen since, it appears Barboza will re-boot his career in a few weeks when he faces unbeaten newcomer Lucas Martins at UFC on FX 7 in hopes of having his 2013 begin in similarly spectacular fashion.
Martins was originally scheduled to take on Justin Salas at the January 19 event. However, according to MMAJunkie, Salas has been injured and Barboza received the call to replace him.
Barboza holds an overall record of 10-1 including seven strike-based stoppages. In addition to Etim, the 26-year old Brazilian also holds wins in the Octagon over Anthony Njokuani and Ross Pearson.
The 11-0 Martins, who is making his UFC debut in the match-up, has finished ten of the foes he’s beaten. Also worth mentioning, nine of Martins’ victories came in 2012 including two triumphs in December.
