Joey Beltran, Rousimar Palhares suspended for nine months after testing positive for PEDs

Rousimar PalharesIt’s relatively rare for a UFC athlete to get popped for performance enhancing drugs and the notion of two from a single event failing their post-fight screenings is almost unheard of. Unfortunately, UFC on FX 6 has earned that exact distinction after light heavyweight Joey Beltran and middleweight Rousimar Palhares both tested positive for PEDs.

The fighters’ shared status was confirmed by UFC officials in a public statement revealing the infraction had earned both men a nine-month suspension retroactive to the card’s date of December 14. Each will also have a drug test at the end of the period if hoping to return to the Octagon.

Beltran, whose substance of choice was the anabolic steroid Nandrolone, earned a Unanimous Decision win over Igor Pokrajac at the show now likely destined to become a No Contest in the wake of his drug test. “The Mexicutioner” wasted little time responding publicly to the situation, denying he willfully used Nandrolone while apologizing to fans, friends, and family.

I can say without a shadow of a doubt I did not inject Nandrolone into my body,” wrote Beltran on Twitter. “I am sorry to my family and friends for the shame this brought to any of you. I promise soon the whole story will be told and I will go through whatever is necessary to find the reason for this positive test. I am at fault for taking a supplement or perhaps combination of something that caused my test result. My team and I will seek the truth. I am sorry once again and truly apologize to the people that matter the most to me.”

Meanwhile, Palhares was found to have an irregular amount of testosterone in his system. As he lost his bout, suffering a knockout at the hands of Hector Lombard, no change will be made to the offering’s outcome.
