Though many of the fighters competing tonight at Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine will be out to earn a spot on the UFC roster by coming out victorious in their respective bouts, former middleweight champion Ronaldo Souza has already inked a deal with the organization. In fact, “Jacare” even has a date in mind for his Octagon unveiling.
According to one of Souza’s coaches, Josuel Distak, the submission-specialist is looking at April for his first fight in the UFC’s infamous eight-sided cage.
“’Jacare is now a UFC fighter and signed a five-fight contract,” said Distak in a conversation with Sherdog. “The result of the fight against Herman will be the basis for choice of his debut opponent in the UFC, which I think will be in April.”
The 16-3 Souza is set to face Ed Herman (20-8) this evening at Strikeforce’s final show. Herman, who has called the UFC home for years, owns past wins over the likes of Brian Ebersole, Kyle Noke, and Glover Teixeira. If victorious the win will be Souza’s third straight, putting him in a perfect position to challenge for a title in 2013 with a couple of wins under the UFC banner.
Fans can catch the two throw down when the broadcast for Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine fires up at 10:00 PM EST.
