Hi, I’m new here. But not as new as you might think. In fact, I’ve been writing about MMA for so long, I need to sit in front of the computer every morning and mull over the headlines before anything else, otherwise I wander around dazed and confused all day. Anyway, here’s what stuck out at me today.
- UFC middleweight contender Michael Bisping, who will be facing an always-tough Vitor Belfort on UFC on FX: “Bisping vs. Belfort” on Saturday night, says he’s destined to be a world champion. Okay. Maybe if champ Anderson Silva retires that destiny will be realized. Until then, however, it will be “always the bridesmaid and never the bride” for the bombastic Brit.
- Lightweight king Benson Henderson has signed a new contract with the UFC. MMAPayout has some of the details, which include a tweet from Henderson’s manager saying that negotiations began before the Eddie Alvarez/Bellator MMA conflagration blew up and made every other 155-pound fighter in the world realize that they’re grossly underpaid. No word yet on if the contract has any sort of “toothpick” clause.
- The eighth season for Bellator MMA (formerly the Bellator Fighting Championships) begins on Thursday, with a new home on SpikeTV, a new base of operations (they moved to Irvine, CA, from Chicago, IL), and a new push to firm up its number two position in the MMA organization food chain. Here’s Zach Arnold of FightOpinion with a very good break down of what that all means for the beleaguered Golden State.
- The 2012 World MMA Awards ceremony was Friday in Las Vegas. “Does anyone really care?” asks Fightlinker. You know, that’s a good question…
