UFC lightweight champ Benson Henderson had the honor of putting his belt on the line in front of millions of fans at home a little more than a month ago thanks to a headlining slot at UFC on FOX 5 and he lived up to the billing, retaining the title in entertaining fashion. In fact, it appears Henderson performed so well in his duel with Nate Diaz the UFC has decided to aim for an April 20 stop on the network for his next defense.
According to MMAFighting, a fight pitting “Bendo” against Gilbert Melendez is being looked at for the main event at UFC on FOX 7. Though not confirmed, the card is expected to take place in San Jose – a perfect locale considering Melendez’s association with the area and time as Strikeforce’s divisional king.
Melendez, who hasn’t fought since a May match-up with Josh Thomson, holds an overall record of 21-2 including wins in his last seven scraps. Though he isn’t a finisher by trade, “El Nino” has beaten the likes of Thomson, Jorge Masvidal, Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri, and Clay Guida over his career as a result relentless pressure and a polished all-around attack. He’s also notoriously tough and has yet to be stopped thus far in his career. Additionally, the native Californian comes with the added intrigue of being one of Diaz’s close friends/training partners.
The 18-2 Henderson has a similar skill-set to his rumor foe’s with the exception of a bit more creativity when it comes to the stand-up department. He is 6-0 since signing with the UFC including victories over Guida, Jim Miller, and Frankie Edgar (x2).
No other bouts have been linked to UFC on FOX 7 though Daniel Cormier has called out Frank Mir in hopes of the two locking horns at the event.
