UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem spent a solid chunk of his time off for a testosterone-related suspension talking trash about then-champion Junior dos Santos. As it turns out, there was also another divisional peer in Overeem’s sights and he happens to be the very individual “The Demolition Man” will meet tonight at UFC 156 – Antonio Silva.
Silva and Overeem nearly crossed paths in Strikeforce and have a little experience with one another from time spent training together at the Blackzilian camp in Florida. However, as minimal as their interactions may have been, the amount of time was still enough to spark a rivalry between the two.
“For me, I didn’t have a problem with him, but then I hear stories that he’s been trying to fight me for two years and he doesn’t like me, this and that. And I ran into him a year ago and he gave me a hug,” explained Overeem to Fuel TV after weighing in for the event. “I dislike fake people. If you don’t like me, don’t come up to me and give me a handshake and a hug. Just tell me you don’t like me and stay away.”
Overeem went on to say Silva’s camp approached him at a press conference last week, demanding respect, while “The Demolition” proposed a different approach to dealing with the well-rounded Brazilian.
“I’m gonna f*cking destroy him, that’s what I’m gonna do,” chirped the confident Overeem.
Considering his past success scoring stoppages it’s hard to dismiss Overeem’s threats. The 36-11 striker has finished 34 of his foes including fifteen featuring strikes. Interestingly enough, three of Silva’s four losses have come via TKO.
