Tonight’s lineup for UFC 156 lived up to the hype, delivering a number of upsets, finishes, and closely-contested clashes. As might have been predicted, Fight of the Night went to the headlining bout between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar with each men earning $50,000 as a result. Aldo retained his featherweight title, albeit barely, in a five-round rumble seeing both men land a good deal of offense.
Meanwhile, Knockout of the Night was handed to Antonio Silva after “Bigfoot” pulled off the upset by taking out top contender Alistair Overeem. The hard-hitting Brazilian’s finish came in the third round of their tilt after stunning Overeem with a few slick combos and then putting him away with a relentless storm of follow-up strikes. Like Aldo/Edgar, Silva also received $50,000 for his performance.
Last but not least, Submission of the Night went to Strikeforce newcomer Bobby Green for his surprising stoppage of Jacob Volkmann on the preliminary portion of the card. Green survived Volkmann’s relentless takedown attempts to wear him down with punches, eventually ending up in a position allowing him to secure a Rear-Naked Choke. He too earned $50,000 for the distinction.
