Bellator is officially minus a champion today after Invicta FC announced former title-holder Zoila Gurgel had signed with the all-female promotion with a debut already scheduled for April. Though no specific date has been attached to the event, Gurgel does have a foe in the form of submission-specialist Jennifer Maia (6-2).
Five Ounces of Pain was also able to confirm that Gurgel will no longer fight for Bellator, also opting to stick at flyweight rather than dip back down to 115 pounds where she won divisional gold.
“I am excited to join Invicta FC, where the best women fighters in the world are competing! Invicta FC has become more than just a promotion – it’s evolved into an entire movement for women’s MMA, and I’m proud to represent that movement while continuing to fight and beat the best opponents out there,” said Gurgel in a prepared statement to media.
Gurgel is 12-2 in her career with notable wins over Jessica Penne, Jessica Aguilar, and Megumi Fujii. However, she has only fought twice since March 2011 due to injuries, splitting a pair of bouts including a December loss to Jessica Eye.
