UFC on Fuel 7 Results: Renan Barao taps Michael McDonald out in exciting main event

UFC on Fuel 7 PosterIt was time again for some afternoon delight of the in-ring variety, as the UFC’s stop in London, England for UFC on Fuel 7 delivered a dose of live MMA to fans before the sun set thanks to the time difference. Two of the brightest youngsters on the organization’s roster served as the main event in the form of a bout between interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao and deserving contender Michael McDonald.

When the smoke cleared, Barao (29-1) came away his 30th consecutive victory and seventh victory under the Zuffa banner including victories over Scott Jorgensen, Brad Pickett, and Urijah Faber. The dynamic Brazilian’s success came in the fourth frame of the fight when he was able to transition on the ground into an Arm-Triangle Choke. Prior to the stoppage McDonald had looked sharp and even staggered Barao in the bout’s early stages. McDonald’s loss dropped his record to 15-2 and snapped an eight-fight winning streak.

Other match-ups scheduled for the show included Cyrille Diabate-Jimi Manuwa and Cub Swanson-Dustin Poirier.

Manuwa’s light heavyweight meeting with Diabate was cut short after an exciting first round that saw the British bomber land some solid offense when “The Snake” suffered some sort of calf-injury, causing the ringside physician to call the fight.

Meanwhile, Poirier-Swanson was as solid as scraps come with each showing off a number of skills. Swanson’s attack, however, was superior and nearly saw him lock up a handful of submissions in addition to landing some solid shots throughout. The effort earned him a decision win marking his fourth victory in a row.

I actually like Anik and Florian better-for one thing you actually have an ex fighter talking about fighting

I wish their voices were more dissimilar, but otherwise they’ve been good on the TV cards.

    Main card picks:

    Manuwa
    Te Huna
    Nelson
    Riddle
    Poirier
    Barao

Fun bunch of prelims, despite some dubious judge scores.

  • Lord Faust says:

How the fuck did any judge give a round, let-alone the fight to Che Mills? Can’t wait for Riddle’s comments at the post-fight press conference.

    Looks like Jimmo is gassed.

Glad Te Huna got the win, that was a huge comeback considering he almost got flatlined in the first round. The scores…. I don’t even…. /wrists

Gunnar really needs to work on tucking his chin.

I’ve got that first round going to Cub. Good round by both guys though.

  • Dufresne says:

Wow, Swanson’s ground game is a lot better than I would have guessed.

  • Dufresne says:

Cub should win that one. I’ve got it 30-27, but I wouldn’t argue with 29-28.

This card just broke the record for decisions at a single UFC event. If my info is correct, the record was 8 and this show has already had 9.

  • Dufresne says:

    10-9 Barao

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • Dufresne says:

I’ve got it 20-18 for Barao at this point mostly due to the takedowns. McDonald has looked fantastic thought.

Not a fan of his corner telling him that he doesn’t have to worry about going 5 rounds though…

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • Dufresne says:

I’ve got that third round solidly in Barao’s favor. So my scorecard has it as 30-27 so far. I’m thinking McDonald is starting to fade.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • Dufresne says:

Damn good showing by McDonald, but Barao is a monster.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • Dufresne says:

I bet Watson is celebrating since he’s got the only real TKO of the night. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see Barao/McDonald get Fight of the Night on top of Barao’s obvious nod for Submission of the Night.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • Lord Faust says:

5-1 on picks, so I’ll take it. I was shocked at the number of decision wins, but I thought the fight card as a whole was pretty good. Maybe that’s because I didn’t have to stay up until past-midnight to see it.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • MacDonald looked sharp but he simply needs to train with some more world class guys and be less predictable. At 22 and relying on a rampage style boxing attack he hung with one of the best in the world for four rounds.
Borao is a killer, Im so bummed that we have to wait to seem him and Cruz fight, both guys have unorthodox styles and I think it’ll be a classic.

Cub looked great, his sub defense and scrambles are getting great, him and Edgar would be sweet.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0
