MMA legend Wanderlei Silva returned to Japan tonight after a lengthy period away from the nation he made a name for himself in and delivered in fine fashion with a knockout in the second round of action. While opponent Brian Stann definitely showed up to fight, hurting Silva in the first five minutes, he ultimately fell to some solid blows and was unable to recover before the referee jumped in to stop the scrap.
Their mutual effort was named the evening’s Fight of the Night and rightfully so after an opening round for the ages followed up by more fun and a finish that sent fans home happy. For the distinction each received $50,000.
Mark Hunt was also one of the evening’s biggest winners with a third round knockout of Stefan Struve, dropping the seven-footer with a huge shot said to have broken the Dutchman’s jaw. Hunt’s finish marked his fourth win in a row inside the Octagon and scored him $50,000 for Knockout of the Night.
No Submission of the Night was awarded since no tap-outs were recorded. However, since Silva’s stoppage of Stann was so sweet, “The Axe Murderer” pocketed another $50,000 for a second Knockout of the Night award.
