Benson Henderson ready to retire if he breaks Anderson Silva’s records

Benson HendersonUFC lightweight champ Benson Henderson has lofty goals, one of which includes employment dealing with the Dewey Decimal System rather than duking it out for hundreds of thousands of dollars. While Henderson’s desire to be a librarian seems strange on the surface, the avid reader’s dream job would ultimately be the end product of a historic run inside the Octagon.

The 29-year old has never shied away from expressing his interest in exiting the UFC as the sport’s great fighter, surpassing Anderson Silva’s status by finishing his career with an unbeaten mark on MMA’s biggest stage. And, if he’s able beat Silva’s record of consecutive title-defenses and/or wins, Henderson recently said he’ll walk away from the cage for good with a content look on his face.

“I’m going to fight three more times this year, three times the year after, three times the year after (that), and that will put me right at Anderson’s record. Once I pass his record, I’m retiring. I’m done,” said the confident competitor in a conversation with MMAJunkie Radio. “After that, I’ll go on to my second career and be a librarian or something.”

Henderson’s next step towards achieving legendary status will come at UFC on FOX 7 where he’ll face former Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez. The bout marks Henderson’s third title-defense with successful showings against Frankie Edgar and Melendez’s friend/teammate Nate Diaz. In his opinion, the work Henderson put in training for both tilts, as well as the time he’s spent in the gym in the years leading up to the April 20 outing, will be the key to his success come showtime.

“I’m not going to win the Gilbert Melendez fight because of what I do these next six weeks. I’m going to win that Gilbert Melendez fight because of what I did for the past one year, two years – training hard the right way,” stated the 18-2 Henderson.

“Bendo” is 6-0 under the UFC banner thus far including impressive efforts against Jim Miller and Clay Guida.
