John Maguire moving to lightweight for clash with Mitch Clarke

Mitch Clarke - UFC 149 Workouts29-year old Brit John Maguire will be back for at least one more outing in the Octagon thanks to his decision to drop down to 155 pounds after a mediocre run at welterweight. Specifically, the king of “Gypsy Jiu-Jitsu” has signed to meet Mitch Clarke in Winnipeg, Manitoba at UFC 161.

The match-up was first reported by The Canadian Press, joining a June 15 event headlined by bantamweight Renan Barao battling Eddie Wineland in hopes of retaining his interim gold.

Maguire holds an overall record of 18-5 but is only 2-2 under the UFC banner. Prior to suffering back-to-back losses in his last two tilts, “The One” had won seven in a row. Thirteen of his victories have featured some form of stoppage including ten by submission.

The 9-2 Clarke, who will be an in-arena favorite based on his Canadian roots, is also in serious need of success after dropping both of his UFC bouts. He too is well-versed on the mat with six tap-outs to his credit.
