UFC featherweight Chad Mendes saw an April 20 tilt with Clay Guida fall apart last week when “The Carpenter” suffered an injury serious enough to force him out of the effort. However, it looks like Mendes will still have an opportunity to face a ranked adversary at the event in the form of Darren Elkins.
Holding a career mark of 16-2, Elkins is 5-0 at 145 pounds since dropping down from lightweight. His most recent rumble came last weekend at UFC 158 where he finished Antonio Carvalho off with strikes in the opening round of their preliminary pairing.
Mendes is 13-1 and a former title-contender. Among the notable opponents the 27-year old Californian has taken out during his run MMA are the likes of Michihiro Omigawa, Erik Koch, and Cub Swanson.
