The lineup for UFC on Fuel 9 suffered a serious shake-up this past week when Ilir Latifi stepped in to fill a vacancy created by the withdrawal of original headliner Alexander Gustafsson. However, it appears the evening’s other main event competitor – Gegard Mousasi – almost pulled out of the tilt too due to injury.
After the event’s conclusion Mousasi revealed he’d suffered some sort of knee injury while training for his go at Gustafsson. Though he wasn’t willing to go into detail, the 27-year old’s attitude indicated he may not see action again before the end of the year.
“I don’t want to talk a lot about my injury, but I can tell that this injury, I’m pretty sure 95 percent wouldn’t fight, from other fighters,” explained Mousasi. You know, I stepped up, I didn’t cancel the show, you know, I don’t know, we go from here, you know.”
“I don’t want to say anything yet, but it’s nothing small,” he concluded.
Adding to concern, Mousasi spent a year on the sidelines in 2012 after tearing his ACL.
