UFC on Fuel 9 Results: Gegard Mousasi handles business with decision win over Ilir Latifi

UFC on Fuel 9 Poster - UPDATEThe main event may not be as originally advertised but UFC on Fuel 9 still featured a lineup laced with talent including an appearance from light heavyweight contender Gegard Mousasi who took on Ilir Latifi, a training partner of original headliner Alexander Gustafsson. Latifi was filling in for “The Mauler” after the rising star went down with a cut a little more than a week ago.

Though a spirited scrap, Mousasi’s stand-up proved to be a bit too much for Latifi, allowing him to pepper his adversary with jabs throughout the tilt. Though Latifi launched a late onslaught it proved to be too little, leaving Mousasi to go on and win a Unanimous Decision. The victory improved his overall record to 34-3-2 and was his fourth straight.

Other bouts on the card included a heavyweight tilt between Matt Mitrione and Phil De Fries, as well potential-laden lightweights Ross Pearson-Ryan Couture colliding in the Octagon. Both bouts ended with a strike-based stoppage albeit in very different efforts. Mitrione put De Fries away less than 30 seconds into their showdown, while Couture came out strong but ate a few stiff shots in the second stanza and couldn’t recover.

Anyone notice that one of the Pretorian post covers was put on upside down?

I think the only word this ref knows is “activity”. God he’s annoying.

Looks like Abedi scratched the shit out of Yousef ‘s neck.

Good lord, Kuiper is throwing Lawlor around like a toy.

Wow. One mistake by Kuiper and Lawlor avoids the pink slip.

Refs have been pretty annoying with quick stand-ups and asking for “activity” when guys have been working really hard.

That was a beautiful performance by McGregor.

Glad I tuned in early enough to catch McGregor… that was some slick striking.

Nice job by Troeng, but there at the end it looked like Cella was just looking for a way out.

Nice round by Johnson. I’m surprised by how fast Madadi got back up after that head kick.

  • Dufresne says:

And Madadi looked good in the second. Hell of a fight so far.

Beautiful. That’s an early candidate for both fight of the night and submission of the night.

    Nice arm triangle by Brandao.

I missed the first couple fights but really good action on this card so far.

Madadi-Johnson and Easton-Pickett both FOTN candidates… for Pickett, it would be his 4th FOTN in his past 7 fights, which is pretty insane (with a KOTN mixed in there as well).

I wonder if a 3rd straight defeat would be the end of the line for Meathead. A loss for either guy would leave them in pretty bad standing, but the usual lack of HW depth gives them a little longer leash. Hopefully a good fight – I’ll pick Meathead but if he can’t keep it on the feet he’ll be in trouble.

I guess I’ll root for Couture to pick up a win in his UFC. Pearson is the more talented fighter, and has beaten dudes like Siver and Sotiropalooza, so he should win this fight. But he’s also inconsistent, going W-L-W-L-W-L-W over his past 7 bouts. I think he’ll break the pattern but I wouldn’t be shocked if Couture finds a way to grind out a victory. Pearson is the pick.

Gegard will tear thru Latifi, but that has more to do with the elite talent of Mousasi than it does Latifi. Yeah this is a fight with no real upside for Gegard, but I feel bad for Latifi cuz while it’s an opportunity he can’t pass up to fight on the big stage, when Gegard makes him look bad ppl will assume Latifi is a scrub when that’s not necessarily the case. Gegard is just too damn good and will do that to the vast majority of fighters out there.

Mitrione just ran through De Fries like a truck. That was a gimme fight for Mitrione, but I expected it to last longer than that.

Still a good win for Meathead… arguably the best opponent he’s defeated during his career.

Couture held his own for a while, but he was simply over matched from the start. I guess his dad pissing off the UFC wasn’t such a good thing for his career.

    Nice work by Pearson.

  • Dufresne says:

This fight kinda sucked. I was hoping Latifi would do something, maybe try for a takedown or two, but he’s just been a punching for the entire fight.

  • Dufresne says:

Why the hell didn’t he try to get the fight to the ground more? He seemed like he might actually be able to do something there at the end. And why is this only 3 rounds? I thought all main events were 5 rounds now.

  • Richard Stabone says:

Crappy main event, but we pretty much knew that would be the case. A glorified sparring session for Mousasi’s Octagon debut. As the saying goes, styles/matchups makes fights and that was a bad one.

So what was Mousasi’s injury issue? (as mentioned in the post-fight interview)

    Here’s another Goldyism-
“DESPITE his famous last name, Ryan Couture has proven himself to be a talented and hardworking fighter, that is paving his own path in the world of MMA.”
Am I nitpicking, or does that just sound plain wrong?

    I gotta admit
…seeing Mousasi walk out under the UFC banner gives the same chills as Nog, Cro Cop, Wandy, Rampage, etc.
