Mike Pierce matched with David Mitchell at UFC 162

David Mitchell - MMAWEEKLYWelterweight Mike Pierce is 8-3 in the Octagon with closely-contested losses to Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, and Johny Hendricks. Though he may not have proven himself as being among the elite yet, the 32-year old grappler will attempt to keep on moving up through the ranks this summer in hopes of procuring another crack at a Top 10 competitor to do so when he faces David Mitchell at UFC 162.

MMAJunkie was first to report the July 6 scrap.

Pierce is currently on a three-fight winning streak including a knockout of Aaron Simpson. He holds an overall mark of 16-5 with other notable victories against Paul Bradley, Seth Baczynski, and Brock Larson.

The 12-2 Mitchell is coming off a win over Simeon Thoresen in January bounce back from consecutive losses in his first two UFC tilts. Nine of his triumphs have come by way of submission.

I’ve always felt that Pierce is a small WW and would do better (read: be considered top 10) in the LW division. I like the guy, but the UFC seems to keep him around as a gate keeper to the top 10. If he could drop to LW, he’d probably work his way into a title shot with in a couple of fights. I think Bendo would have a hell of time with him.
