UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones exited the Octagon at UFC 159 in worse shape than Chael Sonnen despite having beaten his overmatched opponent in the opening round of their headlining rumble. Though Jones’ face barely had a scratch on it, one of his big toes was badly injured as the result of a takedown attempt and had many fans concerned about the amount of time the 25-year old title-holder would be shelved.
Fortunately, it appears Jones won’t be sidelined too long, as further testing has revealed his toe was not actually broken as initially believed but rather dislocated. As such, Jones could be cleared for his normal load in six to eight weeks.
The good news came on this week’s episode of UFC Tonight where a physician was brought in to break down Jones’ injury. The 18-1 “Bones” is expected to meet either Alexander Gustafsson or Lyoto Machida in his next outing. If successful, Jones will hold the divisional record for consecutive title-defenses.
