The UFC’s matchmaking team had its hands full this week when it came to finding fighters to replace injured peers. Fresh off securing a new opponent for Ronaldo Souza at UFC on FX 8, the organization has also found a fill-in for welterweight T.J. Waldburger after he went down for health-related reasons and was forced to withdraw from a UFC 161 scrap against Sean Pierson.
According to an official announcement, Kenny Robertson will take Waldburger’s place in the preliminary pairing. UFC 161 will unfold on June 15 in Calgary with a title-bout between interim bantamweight champ Renan Barao and challenger Eddie Wineland headlining things.
The 12-2 Robertson is coming off a first-frame submission of Brock Jardine in February. Each of his wins save one has featured a finish.
Pierson (13-6) is on a two-fight run and can lay claim to ten stoppages of his own including six knockouts. He owns past wins over Matt Riddle, Jake Hecht, and Lance Benoist under the UFC banner.
