Fans in Boston who like a good brawl are in for a treat when the UFC comes to town on August 17 thanks to a recently revealed rumble between welterweights Thiago Alves and Matt Brown. The match-up represents the first fight attached to UFC on FSN 1, a massive event aimed at helping launch FOX’s new all-sports network.
Though not officially announced, MMAWeekly has confirmed the clash with sources close to the situation.
Alves has been out of action since losing to Martin Kampmann more than a year ago due to chest and knee injuries. For a time the 20-9 Brazilian was one of the most feared fighters in the division, racking up seven straight wins including success against Matt Hughes, Chris Lytle, and Josh Koscheck. However, he has dropped three of his five fights since falling to Georges St-Pierre in a title-bout and is in need of a big win to re-establish some respect.
Meanwhile, Brown’s career trajectory has been the opposite of Alves’, flying under the radar until a recent five-fight run. He holds an overall record of 17-11 with all but two of his victories featuring some form of stoppage.
