Back in 2006, an unbeaten Brandon Vera announced designs on eventually earning gold at both light heavyweight and heavyweight. However, with a 4-6 record in his last ten tilts, Vera hasn’t come close to achieving either goal and is simply hoping to hold on to his job these days. It also looks like he’s ready to close the book on competing at 205 pounds.
According a report from MMAJunkie, Vera will return to the heavyweight division at UFC 164 where he’ll battle Ben Rothwell. Though it still lacks a headliner, the August 31 event is expected to feature in-ring appearances from Diego Sanchez and Alistair Overeem.
The 12-6 Vera has been shelved since coming up short in an action-packed offering against Mauricio Rua last August. Eight of his wins have featured some form of stoppage including a knockout of Frank Mir years ago.
Rothwell holds an overall record of 32-9 with an impressive 28 finishes to his credit. Like Vera, he too is coming off a loss. Prior to the stumble “Big Ben” had gone 2-2 in the Octagon with success against Gilbert Yvel and Brendan Schaub.
