The ongoing feud between UFC stars Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen has been simmering for years and, with the heat being turned up by the potential booking of a bout between the two, it looks like things are about to start boiling over. Sonnen has issued a handful of challenges to Silva in public over the past few weeks without getting more than a nip from “The Axe Murderer”. However, that changed this week when Silva issued a stern warning to Sonnen promising pain.
“Jon Jones and Anderson Silva have been too nice to Chael. I want to suck his blood. I want to smell it. Not just fight – I want to hurt him,” said Silva in a statement released on UFC Tonight. “Chael is a joke, man. He’s going to be second forever. He’s never going to be first.”
Jones and “The Spider” both finished Sonnen in their respective rumbles but neither necessarily put a beating on him in the bouts. Though Silva is out to obtain a similar result with more serious damage issued beforehand, he also clarified by saying he hadn’t received an official offer to face Sonnen.
When Sonnen caught wind of Silva’s remarks he responded in standard, smack-spewing fashion, stating, “I think the real breaking news there is that Wanderlei Silva put together a coherent sentence that somebody understood. But I can assure you, Wanderlei, I will not be signing a contract for you to suck on any part of me. I suggest you go to a (bathhouse) and find yourself.”
Silva holds an overall record of 35-12-1 with 25 TKOs to his credit. Among his career highlights are wins over Quinton Jackson, Michael Bisping, Dan Henderson, and most recently Brian Stann. Comparably, Sonnen is 27-13-1 and is considered to be one of the toughest takedown specialists to deal with in MMA.
While not inked, multiple reports have said the UFC is looking at the UFC on FS 1 card on August 17 as a likely landing spot for the scrap.
