UFC featherweights Erik Koch and Dustin Poirier have a lot in common. Both are 24 years old, have nearly identical records, and know the sting of coming close to contending for a championship only to stumble at the finish line. Additionally, each is coming off a loss, setting up the perfect scenario for a scrap in the mind of Koch.
The Roufusport product recently spoke about his immediate future with Cage Fanatic where he pointed to Poirier as a potential opponent.
“I want to fight Dustin Poirier. That’s just the fight I think makes sense and it’s the fight I want to happen, so hopefully that’ll be my next one,” said Koch, adding interest in avenging a past loss to Chad Mendes even if the match-up didn’t make sense from a rankings standpoint right now.
Koch also emphasized his desire to mix it up in Milwaukee where he lives. The UFC is scheduled to stop there on August 31 for UFC 164.
Poirier is 13-3 in his career with eleven TKOs/submissions and past success against Jonathan Brookins, Josh Grispi, Pablo Garza, and Max Holloway. By comparison, Koch is 13-2 and also a noted finisher as indicated by all but three of his victories featuring some form of stoppage.
