UFC heavyweight Daniel Cormier may not be prepared to compete at 205 pounds yet but he’s definitely ready to fight light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. The two have exchanged barbs in various media appearances and Cormier has vowed to slim down to the necessary mark by year’s end. However, if Jones is truly interested in moving up a division as he’s teased in the past, Cormier would be okay with that too.
“Jon, I haven’t started cutting weight yet, but we can fight at 220 tomorrow if you want. We can fight at any weight,” said Cormier at a UFC 160 Q&A session with fans. “He can walk off the street whatever he weighs now and we can get down to that weight. Let’s fight at any weight Jon, you and I.”
MMAWeekly was on hand and able to capture the comments.
Though Cormier wants to get his hands on Jones, he understands it likely won’t be for awhile with another heavyweight tilt on tap for him and a title-defense from Jones on the horizon. Cormier also knows Jones may end up squaring off with pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva at some point too.
“Jon and Anderson would be a good fight. Regardless of what you think of Jon Jones personally, whether you like him or you don’t like him, he’s a fantastic fighter,” offered Cormier on the potential pairing. “I truly do believe that Jon is. I think he’s the best. He’s the best. Anderson’s going to be too small. Jon’s a good wrestler and he’s a great finisher. I think Jon can beat Anderson.”
Cormier is 12-0 in his career including wins over Antonio Silva, Josh Barnett, and most recently Frank Mir. Comparably, Jones is 18-1 with his only stumble involving a questionable disqualification and dominant performances against opponents such as Mauricio Rua, Quinton Jackson, Rashad Evans, and Lyoto Machida.
