Since being introduced about a year ago, the UFC flyweight division has produced some memorable match-ups thanks to the competitors calling the organization home. However, the talent pool hasn’t gotten much deeper, leaving some fans to wonder how sustainable the weight class actually is. Though champion Demetrious Johnson isn’t foolish enough to deny the need for a few more 125ers, he’s also quick to point out his present peers are among the best fighters in the world.
“I almost finished John Dodson and if there was more time I would have finished him, but Dodson is no slouch, he’s never been finished in his entire career,” said Johnson in an interview with MMAWeekly. “When you’re fighting the best guys in the world, it takes a little more effort to finish these fights. Nobody sucks in this division. There are twelve guys on the roster and they are all badasses.”
Johnson’s next bout will take place at UFC on FOX 8 where he’ll face John Moraga. Though Moraga may not be a huge name at this point in his career, “Mighty Mouse” knows he can’t take his 13-1 foe lightly.
“Moraga’s a great opponent and I’m looking forward to it,” offered Johnson on his opponent. “I’m training my butt off and we’ll see what happens, but we are working pretty hard to make sure we come home with the victory in this one. We’re just ready to get out there and go to work.”
UFC on FOX 8 is scheduled for July 27 in Seattle.
