As reported, UFC light heavyweight Chael Sonnen once again expressed interest in facing an iconic Brazilian with ties to PRIDE and Chute Boxe. However, this time around his focus was on Mauricio Rua rather than Wanderlei Silva and it appears his lobbying as successful.
At the time, the 21-7 Rua was in need of an opponent for a June 15 fight at UFC 161 after original adversary Antonio Rogerio Nogueira withdrew from the bout due to a back injury, and Sonnen was happy to fill the vacancy if needed.
“I hear Brazilian Chicken is off the menu. American Gangster is still available if you want to send your waitress over,” wrote Sonnen on Twitter in a message directed to Rua.
Though nothing official has been announced, MMAJunkie has reported Sonnen will indeed step in to face “Shogun”.
Sonnen was last seen a little more than a month ago in a one-sided loss to champion Jon Jones. He holds an overall record of 27-13-1 including past success against Brian Stann, Michael Bisping, and Yushin Okami.
