UFC on Fuel 10 Results: Fabricio Werdum Finishes “Minotauro” Nogueira

A little less than seven years ago, a BJJ specialist by the name of Fabricio Werdum crossed paths with Top 5 talent Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira under the PRIDE banner. Tonight, the two heavyweights tussled again with a drastically different set of circumstances at play. Not only did the action occur inside the Octagon at UFC on Fuel 10 but came with the backdrop of Brazil and with both men at different stages of their respective careers.

Entering the affair, the 16-5-1 Werdum had won five of his last six scraps including victories over Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Silva, and Roy Nelson. Meanwhile, the 37-year old Nogueira (34-7-1) was coming off a submission of Dave Herman but has alternated between wins/losses for the last five years. When the smoke cleared, Werdum came away with his hand raised as the result of an Armbar. The submission came in the second round of a competitive clash after “Minotauro” verbally tapped to the technique.

Other bouts lined up for this evening’s affair included Jason High-Erick Silva, Rafael Cavalcante-Thiago Silva, and the Ultimate Fighter Brasil 2 final between Leo Santos-William Macario. Both Silvas made quick work of their opponents, picking up first frame finishes in each effort, while Santos earned a submission nod in his scrap. After the bout featherweight champ Jose Aldo was shown to visibly emotional as a result of his close friend’s victory.

Gotta love how the entire arena is filled for the first prelim fight. The only UFC event I went to didn’t fill up until the main card for some reason.

Wow. That was a brutally fast submission. Smith’s knee is jacked.

And he’s licking his own blood… Fantastic.

I probably shouldn’t have laughed as much as I did, but Vemola’s picture on the tale of the tape is cross eyed as hell.

  • Dufresne says:

Vemola dominated that round. Magalhaes is going to have to try something different if he wants to keep his face from looking like he headbutted a hornets nest.

Well, that’s one way to do it.

Pretty sure Damm won this one. It was a close fight, but Damm really turned it up in the third. Hirota got his shots off first, but Damm countered most of them, landed the heavier shots, and got the only takedowns. I’ve got to give it to him 29-28.

Can anyone explain to me why Ildemar Alcantara is pronounced “Al-cantra” but Yuri Alcantara is pronounced “Al-can-tara”?

  • Dufresne says:

Not the most exciting fight, but I guess Alcantara should walk away with a pretty one sided decision.

Very nice. I missed the first half of that round thanks to a giant helping of dog vomit on my foot. Man’s best friend…

    Nice job by Assuncao.

Rony Jason looked very impressive. It’s gonna be hard for them to pick a submission of the night if this keeps up.

Damnit, completely missed that fight. That was one of the ones I was really looking forward to.

Can someone explain to me why every time the UFC goes to Brazil, all the Brazilian fighters look like complete killers and their fights end quickly, but take them outside of Brazil and all of a sudden, JuJitsu isn’t very effective?

Thiago looked really good, his technique was much crisper than he’s shown lately. Lots more combinations instead of his typical one-shot head hunting style. Very fun to watch. Cavalcante looked decent for the first 2 minutes, but after that it looked like Thiago’s combinations were making him a bit gunshy.

    Don’t piss hot Thiago.

  • Dufresne says:

Santos looked decent that second round, but Macario looked pretty terrible after the first 5 minutes. I had Macario winning the first round, sloppily, but he looked gassed at the start of the second. Not at all a good display.

    Congrats to Santos.

  • darth_irritable says:

I guess it’s the hairstyle that causes Guillard to get submitted every other fight, now Macario’s just gone and done the same thing. Moral of the story? Don’t color your hair a crappy blonde color that makes Sonnen’s urine sample look natural.

    Let’s go Big Nog!

  • darth_irritable says:

Gotta be rough going up against big Nog, knowing that he could poop his pants and the crowd would still be chanting Minotauro.

  • Dufresne says:

Is it just me, or does Werdum look a bit fatter than when he fought Nelson or Russow?

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  • Dufresne says:

Close round. Werdum looked good at the beginning, but I think Big Nog did enough to steal it back from him.

Wow. Does this count as a passing of the torch?

I know that technically this was a thing \f beauty, but it really lacked the magic of Fedor pulling that belly to ground armbar on Coleman.

  • Dufresne says:

Random fact brought to you by wikipedia: Werdum’s nickname “Vai Cavalo” apparently means “Go Horse”

    Brazilian nicknames are f*cking weird.

Did you see how fucking wet Big Nog was in the second round? It looked like he just stepped out of a pool… that cant be right.
That being said, crazy night of finishes, was nice.

  • AlphaOmega says:

Anyone good at lip reading and Portuguese to know what Big Nog screamed right after he jerked his arm out from werdum’s grasp?

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • MCM says:

I was wondering the same thing AO. That’s two main events in a row Yamasaki has stopped and had the fighter on bottom yell at him. I thought Big Nig was protesting but I don’t speak Portuguese.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • AlphaOmega says:

Ya at first I thought it was because it looked like Werdum bent Big Nog’s elbow back, so maybe the ref thought it snapped and called it, but then Buffer said it was a verbal tap out

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

Nog’s outpouring of emotion had to do with losing in front of his fellow Brazilians, while having to verbally quit, and knowing that it effectively ends his chances of ever again competing to be a champion.

    Nog had a great career.
