UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones clearly wasn’t kidding when he recently Tweeted that fans could expect an announcement regarding his rumble with Alexander Gustafsson in the immediate future. In fact, it didn’t even take a full day for the fight to officially materialize.
Earlier today the UFC confirmed Jones and Gustafsson had been booked to headline the organization’s September 21 stop in Toronto for UFC 165. The bout will mark the third time “Bones” has defended his belt in the Canadian city, beating Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort in previous pairings.
The 18-1 Jones will be shooting for a record-setting sixth instance of success while serving as the divisional king. Fifteen of his wins have featured a finish including those over Mauricio Rua, Ryan Bader, and Chael Sonnen.
Gustafsson holds an overall record of 15-1 and has won six straight since his lone loss. Like Jones, “The Mauler” has scored stoppages in the bulk of his victories, though he scored a Unanimous Decision over Rua apart in his most recent rumble.
