The floodgates were opened at the top of the UFC middleweight division last night after Anderson Silva stated his focus was no longer on the title he’d lost moments earlier to Chris Weidman. Without the perennial favorite in the picture, hope has been renewed for plenty of other fighters including Michael Bisping.
Bisping, who has come close to challenging for the championship before but never had an actual title-shot, went on Twitter last night and wasted no time in calling Weidman out.
“So you’re the champ,” wrote Bisping. “Defend it, fight me!”
Though Vitor Belfort is almost certainly up next for Weidman barring a change in heart from Silva, “The Count” could lay claim to the opportunity with a big win in his next bout. Bisping is currently shelved while recovering from a few injuries but is aiming for a match-up in Manchester later this year. He holds an overall record of 24-5 and was last seen scoring a decision win over Alan Belcher at UFC 159.
