Featherweight Marloes Coenen has a huge opportunity in front of her tonight at Invicta FC 6 when she collides with power-laden pugilist Cristiane Justino. The bout will serve as a rematch of a 2010 tilt “Cyborg” won via TKO, but more importantly will give Coenen a chance to cement her claim as one of MMA’s top female fighters. Likewise, if victorious, Coenen could very well end up getting a call from the UFC to gauge her interest in competing as a challenger for the bantamweight crown.
Coenen had a solid run at 135 pounds in Strikeforce including a short stint as champion. Though she’s since bulked up, the 32-year old grappler recently revealed she would consider slimming back down if given enough time beforehand and the match-up made the process worthwhile.
“I have fought all over the place, 145, 155, openweight, etc., (and) I really think I am the best at 145,” said Coenen in an interview with MMAFrenzy. “If I look back at when I fought at 135 my first fight was the best because I had a long time to get to weight by training, dieting, and proper rest. Then after that, I did a lot of traveling and I didn’t take care of myself very good. So after all that I had to start training and dieting again, and the weight cut was very hard on my body.”
“I can make 135, but I really need a long period beforehand so I can diet and train at a good pace so I am still strong in the fight,” she concluded.
“Rumina” is 2-0 since splitting from Strikeforce. She holds an overall record of 21-5 with fifteen submission finishes and past wins over Roxy Modafferi, Liz Carmouche, and Sarah Kaufman.
