UFC lightweight Michael Chiesa (9-0) is unbeaten, has submitted all but two of the opponents he’s faced, and emerged as the last man standing on TUF 15. However, don’t expect UFC on FOX 8 opponent Jorge Masvidal to label Cbiesa as a “big deal” unless uttering the phrase sarcastically in relation to the 25-year old’s accomplishments.
Masivdal had some harsh words for Chiesa during a recent interview with MMAJunkie where he equated victory on July 27 to little more than taking candy from a baby.
“There’s nothing nowhere that impresses me about him. He’s like a watered-down Royce Gracie. I don’t see anything on this guy,” said Masvidal. “I’m excited about getting a ‘W’ against anybody at lightweight, but especially against this guy. They’re giving me money at this point.”
The 24-7 “Gamebred” understands Chiesa obviously has some skills at his disposal. They just aren’t at a level giving Masvidal cause for concern.
“Anyone can get caught. But nine times out of ten, I don’t think this guy has anything for me,” concluded Masvidal on Chiesa. “I’ve fought better grapplers than him. I roll daily with better grapplers than him. And I don’t think his wrestling is as good as mine to begin with.”
Chiesa-Masvidal is set to serve as the featured fight on the preliminary portion of the card (broadcast on FX).
