UFC on FOX 8 Results: Demetrious Johnson retains title with submission victory

The city of Seattle once again played host to the Octagon thanks to the lineup for UFC on FOX 8. Headlined by a flyweight title-fight between lightning-quick champion Demetrious Johnson and aggressive contender John Moraga, the show featured a number of interesting match-ups including undercard efforts from Melvin Guillard-Mac Danzig and Michael Chiesa-Jorge Masvidal.

In the evening’s co-headliner, Rory MacDonald outpointed Jake Ellenberger by picking him apart with jabs and staying away from the heavy-handed grappler’s power. Meanwhile, Johnson earned a submission victory over Moraga after cruising through the bulk of the bout due to speed and technique. The performance marked his fourth straight win at 125 pounds and improved his overall record to 18-2-1.

Well Herman/Smith just took Fotn honors, and wouldnt be shocked to see it get nominated for Foty as well.

Wow, only one judge got the score right at 29-28. It could have gone either way, but neither of them won all three rounds.

What the hell was going on with the audio from the commentators there for a bit?

Dufresne I noticed that too. Found it kind of funny it was playing back audio from the Kedzie fight.

How do you boo that fight? They got a little spoiled with the previous fight, BTW had Yves winning that.

  • Dufresne says:

Wtf is going on with these judges? Every fight is a split decision and the last two have had scores of 30-27 and 27-30. It’s clear that they have drastically different scoring criteria from one another, and with a title shot that’s probably going to feature speed and movement against power and aggression that makes me nervous.

Judges like the ones tonight are the reason why im going to try and get into Reffing/Judging MMA bouts. So tired of some of them.

That was just violent. Danzig wasn’t crying because he lost, he was crying because those hammer fists brought back every nightmare he’s ever had. Holy shit.

That last hammerfist on an unprotected Danzig made ME cry. Sweet merciful mother of God. I think I’d rather be prison-raped by Overeem.

Looks like takedowns still count for more than anything else. At least the judges were on the same side this time.

What the hell is that weird kick Chiesa is trying to throw up the middle? It looks like that kick the token old guy in karate classes try.

The hell is up with this croud tonight?

Wow! At the buzzer! But Chiesa did a hell of a lot better that first round than I thought he would. And Masvidal definitely can’t say it was “an easy paycheck” anymore, Chiesa made him work for it to the end.

I didn’t give Lawler much of a chance against Koscheck. I’ve viewed him as the Melvin Guillard of the WW division. But after dominating Kos and now Voelker, it seems pretty evident that Robbie has found the happy medium with his aggressive approach, while also figuring out how to mix up his striking. Good shite.

  • Dufresne says:

Robby looked good tonight. I don’t think that takes KOotN from Guillard, but it was impressive.

Jake is a beast but I am fully on board the Rory bandwagon. Should be an amazing scrap.

This is not near as exciting as I expected, but Rory is winning.

  • Richard Stabone says:

Mannnn….what a letdown. That sucked. Ellenberger completely changed his usual style of fighting, a la Carlos Condit, with a potential title shot on the line.

The UFC likes to pay the champs and let the rest scrape to get by. I think that definitely played a big role in how this dud of a fight played out.

Is it just me or do Ronda’s glasses look totally non-prescription?

  • Niv says:

Well I think MacDonald dictated how the fight was going to go, but man I’m with you Richard that was a huge letdown.

Rory’s the real deal but I hope he doesn’t fight that safe too much, there’s so much more he’s capable of.

  • Richard Stabone says:

Jake is usually firing away right from the opening bell, and that just wasn’t the case tonight. Sure, Rory is plenty good enough to dictate the action but Jake was already fighting a different fight before Rory had a chance to dictate anything. Doesn’t necessarily mean it was poor strategy but if jake had it to do over again I definitely think he’d push the action sooner.

Ellenberger has become one of those guys who has abandoned his grappling after some success with the KO. Guys like this become one-dimensional … Big Country, Hendo for example. Rory was the better tactician and Ellenberger needs to form a game plan other than just the occasional flurry and hope to land a big one.
