It has been a little more than a week since UFC light heavyweight Phil Davis outpointed Lyoto Machida in an effort many felt “The Dragon” deserved to walk away victorious from. Though Davis did put Machida on the mat a few times, most of the match-up’s offense seemed to come from Brazilian’s side even though it wasn’t necessarily reflected on the scorecards
Davis has heard the criticism and decided to respond on a recent episode of Inside MMA, providing his own explanation on why he deserved to get the judges’ nod.
“I won because I stayed busier. I went to work early, I stayed busy the entire round, and whenever I could I went for takedowns. Whether you get them or not, you must look to advance your position when standing and on the ground,” said Davis of the UFC 163 scrap. “Takedowns matter a lot.”
The 12-1 “Mr. Wonderful” went on to break down Machida’s style as being counter-productive when it comes to winning rounds based on the lack of aggression.
