With UFC President Dana White recently confirming the organization was attempting to book Vitor Belfort against Lyoto Machida, it appeared as though “The Phenom” was likely to have his next fight lined up. However, as fans have learned lately, Belfort has become somewhat picky when it comes to who he’ll be colliding with inside the Octagon, and it looks like he may not be too keen on the clash.
“I wanted Machida to fight Vitor Belfort, but Vitor Belfort is his own matchmaker, apparently. He wants to make his own fights,” said White in a Q&A with fans in Boston for UFC Fight Night 26.
MMAJunkie was on the scene and able to capture the conversation.
With Belfort apparently dismissing the idea of meeting Machida, White said he has another hard to please pugilist in mind – Nick Diaz.
“I talked to Diaz today, and I made him an offer, so we’ll see what happens. He had been talking about going to 185 pounds. Machida has been talking about going to 185 pounds. So we wanted to see if he wanted to fight Machida at 185,” revealed White with a chuckle.
White concluded by saying he was still waiting to hear back from Diaz’s camp.
The 26-9-1 Diaz has been “retired” since a March loss to welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, though he has stated he would consider a return to the ring if the opponent interested him.
