Rory MacDonald-Robbie Lawler match-up made official for UFC 167

Rory MacDonald-Robbie Lawler match-up made official for UFC 167

A previously rumored rumble between welterweights Rory MacDonald (15-1) and Robbie Lawler (21-9) is no longer probable but definite, as organization officials have confirmed the clash has been booked for November 16 at UFC 167. Both men are among a handful of 170-pound contenders looking for a crack at gold in 2014.

MacDonald picked up his fifth consecutive instance of in-ring success last month with a decision over Jake Ellenberger at UFC on FOX 8. Other career highlights on the 23-year old’s record include triumphs against B.J. Penn, Mike Pyle, and Nate Diaz.

A cement-fisted slugger, Lawler is 21-9 including an impressive 18 wins by way of knockout. He is 2-0 since returning to the UFC with finishes of Bobby Voelker and Josh Koscheck.

UFC 167 is headlined by MacDonald’s mentor and teammate, Georges St-Pierre, putting his welterweight belt on the line against bearded brawler Johny Hendricks.

As much as I want Lawler to smash MacDonald to pieces, MacDonald is just way too technical for Lawler IMO. I hope its a good one tho. Lawler by flash KO in the first!!!

This should be a pretty cool fight, but I think Lawler’s aggression will work against him when facing an opponent as highly skilled & technically sound as Rory. Then again, Rory showed against Ellenberger that if you sit back & don’t press the action he’s perfectly capable of picking you apart with the jab (Rory has a slight reach advantage on both Ellenberger & Lawler). That young dude is just really damn good.

And it’s pretty cool they put the two showcase WW bouts on the same card, but I’d like to see things set up where the winner of the title bout will face the winner of the other (#1 contender) bout. That’s not likely to happen…

If GSP loses, he’ll get an immediate rematch with Big Rig.

If GSP wins, he and Rory aren’t gonna fight each other.

So the only way it works is if GSP and Lawler both win. Could happen, but I don’t like the odds.

If GSP and Rory both win, maybe that opens up the door for Maia to get a title shot (with a win over Shields)… Dana’s reluctant ‘Plan B’.
