Matt Grice, a member of the UFC’s active roster as a featherweight, remains in the hospital following a car accident Sunday night in Oklahoma.
Grice was stuck by a car while he was sitting at a red light in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He is a police officer in Oklahoma City, but was off-duty at the time.
He remains in the hospital according to sources following surgery to reduce swelling and bleeding around the brain. We will continue to provide updates as they come in.
Several members of the UFC community have come out in support of Grice, including UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman.
“Prayers and thoughts out to fellow UFC fighter Matt Grice,” Weidman posted. “Was in a bad car accident and is in critical condition.”
Liz Carmouche wrote on Twitter, “Wishing a speedy recovery to Matt Grice,” as did James Head, who wrote, “Let’s all wish Matt Grice a safe and speedy recovery! He is a tough, tough cat.”
The Oklahoma City Police issued a statement on Grice late Monday afternoon, but no further updates on his condition have been made public. Captain Dexter Nelson released the following:
“On Sunday, Sept 8th, at approximately 4pm off-duty Officer Matthew Grice (age 32) was involved in a serious multi-car accident in Shawnee, OK (accident investigated by Oklahoma Highway Patrol). The accident left him in critical condition.
Officer Grice was transported to an Oklahoma City hospital ,where his status is currently listed as confidential. The Grice family has asked for privacy as they deal with this sudden and unfortunate situation.
Officer Grice has been with the Oklahoma City Police Department for 5 years.”
