This bout could very well produce a title-contender depending on how featherweight champion Jose Aldo’s health holds up in terms of allowing him to remain active. Lentz is on a three-fight winning streak but lacks a big name in the bunch, giving him an opportunity to truly show he belongs amongst the division’s elite by taking out Mendes. On the other hand, Mendes has been tearing through opponents as of late, and with four consecutive knockouts to his credit he will no doubt be headhunting come showtime.
2013 has been a historic year for the UFC in terms of their partnership with FOX. In addition to producing four events for the chief network, the organization also helped launch FOX Sports 1 and delivered a ton of additional action through FX/Fuel TV. Both parties look ready to end the twelve-month period on a high-note with a steadily growing star-studded lineup for UFC on FOX 9. The December 14 event already features a title-fight, plus two tilts with contendership implications as well as a pair of bouts between seasoned veterans with something to prove.
