It’s been over six months now since Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was submitted (and injured) by Fabricio Werdum at UFC on FUEL TV 10, and the decorated fighter is looking forward to who his next opponent could be. According to “Minotauro”, he believes his next bout could be against the promotion’s #10 ranked heavyweight, Roy “Big Country” Nelson. Nogueira relayed his suspicion to MMA Fighting.com in a recent interview, before adding:
“I’m totally interested in this fight,” Nogueira said. “He’s a tough athlete and is always fighting the tops. I would like to fight him. He has a heavy hand and would be a good challenge.”
Yes, there’s no question Nelson has a “heavy hand”, and it’s a bout that makes sense, when you consider that both men are coming off losses. In fact, Nelson has lost his last two fights, as he fell by decision to Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier in June and October respectively.
Nogueira, meanwhile, tapped out Dave Herman at UFC 153 last October before facing Werdum. And how is the 37 year-old’s arm doing after being caught in a Werdum armbar?
“I’m not training hard yet, but I’m always training something with my coaches,” Nogueira said. “But I won’t be able to train hard before January. I want to be back to the cage by March or April.”
It will good to see the former PRIDE champ back in action. Nogueira also confirmed in the interview that he and his brother Antonio Rogerio Nogueira plan to expand their gyms from 16 to 51 by the end of 2014.
