UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones continues to deal with issues from his foot injury suffered earlier this year in a win over Chael Sonnen.
While the injury didn’t keep him from defeating Alexander Gustafsson a few months ago, it will keep him out of action until later in 2014 than originally planned.
Once he does return, “Bones” is slated to face Glover Teixeira.
“The reason why I didn’t take the fight [in February] is because I don’t feel my body is ready for a training camp,” said Jones, during a recent interview with MMAjunkie.com. “I wanted to be there for the fans, I wanted to be there for the UFC, but in order for me to do that, I need to listen to my body and come prepared to compete, and that’s being healthy.”
Along with the foot injury, which Jones said is “definitely not ready to go yet,” he confirmed that the cut suffered over his eye vs. Gustafsson remains a problem.
“My eye is definitely not ready to be punched,” he said.
One final thing is keeping him from wanting to devote 100-percent attention to a training camp: Christmas.
“I’ve spent the last three Christmases in Albuquerque, and I really want to just be with my family back in New York state and let my kids see Christmas the way it’s supposed to be,” Jones said. “That’s a big reason why I kind of delayed that next fight until March.”
